When the first glance is already part of the experience

When the first glance is already part of the experience

Entering a car showroom means stepping into a space built around perception. Before learning about performance, technology or technical details, customers first notice a vehicle’s proportions, surfaces, materials and colour.

In an environment dedicated to a premium brand such as Mercedes, every element contributes to this first impression. Architecture sets the rhythm of the space, furnishings guide the journey and light becomes the tool that allows each vehicle to fully express its character.

For this project in Dardilly, France, the lighting was designed not simply to provide adequate visibility, but to enhance the vehicles and naturally guide customers through the showroom.

The aim was to create an elegant, orderly environment capable of immediately communicating the brand’s positioning while offering an authentic perception of the vehicles on display.

Lighting surfaces that are constantly changing

Lighting surfaces that are constantly changing

A car body is one of the most complex surfaces to illuminate.

Glossy paintwork, chrome details, glass and metallic finishes react differently to light, generating reflections that can either enhance the design or, if uncontrolled, disturb vision and alter the perception of shapes.

The design challenge was therefore to find the right balance between brilliance, uniformity and glare control, while maintaining light capable of accurately rendering colours, volumes and finishes.

Luminaire positioning also played a decisive role. The light had to allow vehicles to be viewed from different angles, guide the eye along the bodywork and make interiors clearly visible while avoiding unwanted reflections on glossy surfaces.

The objective was not simply uniform illumination, but light capable of creating a visual hierarchy and directing attention exactly where it is needed.

3F Linux: lighting precision at the service of the product

To bring this vision to life, 3F Linux was selected: a modular linear system designed to provide outstanding flexibility and dedicated light distributions.

At the heart of the system are its PMMA optics, available in different geometries to shape light according to the needs of the space. This flexibility makes it possible to create precise distributions, avoiding unnecessary spill and concentrating light where it is truly needed.

In the Mercedes showroom, a UGR optic was used to control glare and reduce reflections on bodywork and glazed surfaces.

High colour rendering also reproduces paint tones and materials faithfully, allowing customers to perceive the vehicle’s true colour even under artificial lighting.

The linear arrangement of the luminaires follows the showroom route, creates an orderly visual rhythm and gives continuity to the entire environment. The technology remains discreet, allowing the displayed vehicle to become the true protagonist.

Light that guides customers without drawing attention to itself

Light that guides customers without drawing attention to itself

The quality of a showroom depends not only on how a vehicle is illuminated, but on how customers experience the entire journey through the space.

Light accompanies visitors from the first view of the car to the sales areas, guiding the eye and creating a coherent visual sequence.

Vehicles emerge naturally from the space, their volumes become easier to read and details can be observed without visual fatigue. At the same time, glare control makes the environment more comfortable for both customers and staff throughout the working day.

Lighting thus becomes an almost invisible presence: it does not seek attention, but creates the conditions for design, materials and brand identity to be perceived at their very best.

When light and brand identity speak the same language

When light and brand identity speak the same language

Designing lighting for a premium brand means going beyond technical performance.

Every choice must be consistent with the image the space aims to convey: precision, quality, technology and attention to detail.

The integration of 3F Linux into the Mercedes showroom has created an environment where energy efficiency, visual comfort and perceptual quality work together.

Light enhances product perception, makes the exhibition route easier to read and supports the brand’s premium positioning without ever competing with the architecture.

The result is a showroom where light does not simply display cars: it tells the story of their design, strengthens their identity and guides customers towards their choice.
