Commercial car park - Casalecchio di Reno

A project that keeps telling its story over time

A project that keeps telling its story over time

Some projects are judged the moment the lights are switched on. Others reveal their true value only as the years go by.

In 2013 a lighting project was developed for the outdoor car park of a large commercial complex in Casalecchio di Reno, with the aim of ensuring visibility, safety and continuity of service throughout all hours of use.

A car park may appear to be a simple space, but it is experienced in very different conditions: during peak hours it must support the movement of vehicles and pedestrians, while at night it must continue to provide orientation and a sense of safety, while reducing energy use when the area is less busy.

More than ten years later, the 3F Linda luminaires installed as part of the project are still fully operational. This is what turns an ordinary outdoor lighting installation into a story of reliability proven in the field.

Lighting only when and where it is needed

Lighting only when and where it is needed

From the outset, the project was developed around a differentiated lighting management strategy.

During normal opening hours, the system provides suitable illumination across the entire car park, making traffic lanes, parking bays and pedestrian routes easy to read.

From 9:00 pm onwards, the night-time configuration comes into operation and remains active until approximately 7:00–8:00 am. At this stage, there is no need to keep the entire installation switched on: one luminaire out of every eight remains in operation, maintaining sufficient light for safe orientation and movement.

This design choice anticipated a principle that is now central to responsible lighting design: not to illuminate indiscriminately, but to use only the amount of light actually required for the way the space is being used.

3F Linda: reliability measured in operating hours

The project uses 3F Linda, a luminaire developed for applications where robustness, efficiency and long-term reliability are essential requirements.

In an outdoor car park, luminaires must withstand daily temperature changes, humidity, dust and long operating hours. Good performance at installation is not enough: true value emerges when that performance is maintained over the years.

The luminaires connected to the night-time circuit provide a particularly meaningful test today. As the units with the highest number of operating hours, they have reached the order of 100,000 hours of operation and are still carrying out their function today.

A figure that turns lifetime from a declared value into a performance proven directly in the field.
When efficiency also means not replacing

When efficiency also means not replacing

Efficiency is often discussed only in terms of energy consumption. Yet the sustainability of a lighting installation can also be measured by what, over time, does not need to be replaced.

A luminaire that continues to operate after years of intensive use reduces maintenance requirements, limits component replacement and decreases the work needed to keep the installation running.

Across a large commercial car park, this also means fewer maintenance visits, lifting platforms, temporary closures and indirect infrastructure management costs.

The long operating life of the 3F Linda luminaires installed in Casalecchio di Reno therefore shows how build quality, correct lighting design and product durability can work together to protect the overall value of the investment.

3F Filippi:

3F Linda

Casalecchio di Reno (BO) - Italy
• More than ten years of continuous operation
• Luminaires still fully operational
• Approximately 100,000 operating hours for the most heavily used units
• Reduced consumption through partial night-time lighting

• High long-term reliability
• Lower maintenance requirements
• Safety and visibility during night-time hours

The most important test is time

The most important test is time

In 2013, the objective was to create a system capable of lighting a large commercial car park efficiently and safely. Today, that same project offers something more: tangible evidence of the luminaires’ ability to maintain their function over time.

The 3F Linda luminaires are still lighting the area, including the units subjected to the most intensive night-time operating regime.

In a sector where lifetime, efficiency and reliability are often expressed through laboratory figures, this project tells the story of performance through real-world experience.

More than ten years of service and approximately 100,000 operating hours for the most heavily used luminaires become concrete evidence of a simple principle: good design means thinking not only about installation day, but about all the years that follow.
