A hospital evolving with the needs of care

S. Maria delle Croci Hospital has long been a landmark of healthcare in Ravenna. Built in 1959 to a design by architect Domenico Sandri, the complex consists of a main block flanked by four secondary or mixed-use pavilions, with a total volume of more than 100,000 cubic metres and a capacity of 415 beds.

Over time, the facility has continued to evolve in response to new clinical and organisational needs. The opening of the new sterilisation rooms marked another step in this process, introducing environments in which every technical component must help ensure reliability, continuity and high-quality operating conditions.

In this context, lighting is far from a secondary element. It must support activities requiring attention and precision, integrate into spaces subject to intensive use and provide consistent lighting quality over time. These requirements shaped 3F Filippi’s contribution to the project.

The challenge: reliable light for high-intensity environments

The challenge: reliable light for high-intensity environments

Hospital environments require solutions designed to operate continuously. In sterilisation areas this requirement is even more important: spaces must be clearly readable, tasks must be performed under appropriate visual conditions, and the system must maintain reliable performance even under intensive use.

The challenge was therefore to create a system combining efficiency, durability and visual comfort. It was not simply a matter of increasing light levels, but of distributing light in a balanced way, limiting glare and unwanted shadows and creating conditions that support staff concentration.

In a hospital, lighting quality affects both the perception of space and the everyday experience of those who use it. Well-controlled light helps make environments more orderly, readable and comfortable, supporting staff without becoming intrusive.

L 650 and L 340: two solutions for different needs

L 650 and L 340: two solutions for different needs

To respond to the characteristics of the different spaces, L 650 and L 340 were selected: two 3F Filippi luminaires designed to combine lighting performance, robustness and long-term reliability.

L 650 is naturally suited to environments where cleanliness, protection and continuity of service are central requirements. The family is designed for healthcare and cleanroom applications, with configurations capable of high protection ratings and surfaces conceived to facilitate cleaning operations. A solution consistent with the technical nature of the new sterilisation areas.

L 340 completes the project in spaces requiring soft, comfortable light. Its uniform distribution helps make surfaces easier to read while reducing contrasts and glare, creating a visually balanced environment even during prolonged stays. Combining the two products makes it possible to adapt the light to different functions while maintaining consistency throughout the project.

04. Visual comfort as part of environmental quality

In a healthcare environment, light is experienced for many consecutive hours. Doctors, nurses and other professionals need visual conditions that support concentration and precision, while patients and visitors benefit from spaces perceived as welcoming and reassuring.

For this reason, the project placed particular emphasis on visual comfort, seeking a distribution capable of avoiding glare and unwanted shadows. The aim is light that is present when needed but never aggressive: technical enough to support healthcare activities, yet balanced in the overall perception of the space.

This approach treats lighting as an integral part of environmental quality. Technology remains discreet and leaves room for people, helping create better conditions for those who work in the facility every day and for those who experience it while receiving care.

Light designed to support everyday work

Light designed to support everyday work

The S. Maria delle Croci Hospital project shows how, even in highly technical environments, performance and attention to people can move in the same direction. The choice of L 650 and L 340 made it possible to meet the needs of the new areas with robust, long-lasting solutions designed to reduce maintenance requirements.

The result is lighting conceived not only for the moment of installation, but to support the facility over time. Light that assists daily activities, improves the readability of spaces and contributes to the comfort of everyone who uses the hospital each day.

For 3F Filippi, lighting a healthcare environment means exactly this: putting expertise and reliability at the service of spaces where every detail can help create better conditions for working, assisting and caring for people.
