A shopping centre car park is a service space, but it is also one of the first points of contact between visitors and the building. It is used for many hours, continuously crossed by people and vehicles, and lighting, orientation and spatial perception must coexist with the need for reliability and operational continuity.
This is the context of the project developed by 3F Filippi for Winkelcentrum Anklaar in Apeldoorn, the Netherlands.
The aim was to create a lighting system capable of making the car park bright, legible and comfortable, while ensuring reliable performance over the long term. This is especially important in a large infrastructure, where maintenance work can generate costs and interfere with the normal use of the spaces.
3F Linda was selected to meet these requirements and was installed extensively throughout the different areas of the car park. Today, the solution can be viewed from a particularly meaningful perspective: time.
Inside a covered car park, light must make the space immediately understandable.
Traffic lanes, parking bays, columns, signage and pedestrian routes share the same visual field. Effective light distribution therefore contributes not only to illuminance levels, but also to the overall legibility of the environment.
At Winkelcentrum Anklaar, the arrangement of the 3F Linda luminaires follows the development of the traffic lanes and parking areas, creating a regular luminous presence throughout the car park.
The aim is to prevent light from becoming a disturbing element and instead help create an environment in which it is easy to find one's way and perceive what is happening nearby.
In a predominantly functional space, comfort comes from the ability of light to perform its role discreetly: illuminating where needed, accompanying movement and making spaces immediately recognisable.
3F Linda was selected for the project: a sealed, anti-corrosion luminaire particularly suited to applications where robustness and continuity of operation are essential requirements.
In a shopping centre car park, reliability has a value that goes beyond the performance of the individual luminaire. Reducing the frequency of interventions means limiting maintenance activities in a space used every day by a large number of people.
The possibility of updating the product over time is also important: the configuration of 3F Linda was conceived to allow future upgrades without necessarily requiring replacement of the entire lighting system.
Durability, reduced maintenance and the possibility to evolve therefore become parts of the same approach: designing a system with its entire service life in mind, not only the moment of installation.
Some characteristics can be described in a technical datasheet. Others become more meaningful when they can be observed directly over time.
More than seven years after installation, the 3F Linda luminaires at Winkelcentrum Anklaar were still operating without having required maintenance, continuing to provide lighting for the car park.
This is what makes the reference particularly significant.
Continuity of performance helps reduce the need for interventions and, consequently, possible operational interruptions and the costs associated with managing the system.
The project therefore provides tangible evidence of what long-term reliability means: not only designing to achieve specific initial performance, but ensuring that this performance can accompany the space throughout years of use.
The sustainability of a lighting solution also depends on its ability to last.
A luminaire that maintains its functionality over time, requires limited intervention and can be upgraded helps reduce the need for replacement and the use of new resources.
Winkelcentrum Anklaar embodies this approach. The light installed years ago continues to be an integral part of the daily operation of the car park, accompanying vehicles and people through a space in constant use.
For 3F Filippi, designing also means considering this dimension of time: creating solutions capable of meeting today's needs without losing sight of tomorrow's.
Because in some projects, the clearest demonstration of quality does not come on opening day. It comes years later.
