A company canteen is more than a place to eat. It is a space for meeting, sharing and taking a break, where people’s comfort plays a central role.
This is the vision behind the lighting project developed by 3F Filippi for Manitou’s company canteen at its Cavazzona site, in the province of Modena, Italy.
Manitou is an international group specialising in material handling, personnel lifting and earthmoving solutions, with a long-standing commitment to technological innovation.
The project set out to improve the quality of the environment, ensure visual comfort and optimise energy consumption, using LED solutions tailored to different activities.
Lighting a company canteen means meeting different needs within the same space.
The dining area calls for uniform, comfortable light that supports wellbeing during breaks. The kitchen, meanwhile, requires functional, high-quality lighting that can render food colours faithfully.
The challenge was to achieve the specified illuminance and uniformity levels while optimising luminaire placement and system efficiency: a balance of light quality, precise lighting design and energy efficiency.
Two professional LED luminaires were selected to meet the building’s different needs: 3F Six Blindo and L 340 Diffused Light.
In the dining area, 3F Six Blindo provides a 6500 K colour temperature, high colour rendering and wide-beam optics. Its track-mounted installation enables flexible positioning of light points and uniform illumination across a large area.
In the kitchen, L 340 Luce Diffusa features an LGS diffuser and a frame with an IP65 protection rating. Its diffuse light and colour rendering help staff perceive the colours and freshness of ingredients accurately.
Two different solutions work together to address the specific requirements of each space.
Lighting quality also depends on how effectively the light is controlled.
The DALI lighting control system adjusts illumination according to occupancy and available daylight, matching light output to actual needs and helping to avoid unnecessary energy consumption.
Careful design achieved the required average illuminance levels, ensured uniform lighting and optimised luminaire positioning.
The project also incorporates RG0-rated solutions, classified in the exempt group for photobiological risk under the relevant assessment conditions. Comfort, control and efficiency thus form part of a single strategy.
The Manitou project shows how spaces intended for breaks and social interaction can benefit from people-focused lighting design.
By combining 3F Six Blindo, L 340 Luce Diffusa and intelligent DALI control, the installation brings together light quality, comfort and efficiency in both the dining and kitchen areas.
Because designing good lighting also means supporting people’s wellbeing, making spaces more welcoming, functional and pleasant to use.
