Professional lighting solutions

From the factory floor to the hospital ward, from the open space to the chilled counter: design guides, standard requirements and LED luminaires for every working environment.

One space, one light: how to use these pages

There is no such thing as «good lighting» in the abstract. There is the right light for that task, in that space, for those people: 500 lux on a desk is sound design, the same 500 lux on a quality-control bench is a mistake, and in a patient room at night it would be cruelty.

That is why we wrote one guide per environment instead of a single page. Each one starts from the requirements that EN 12464-1 sets for that specific space, explains which quantities actually matter — maintained illuminance, uniformity, UGR, colour rendering, ingress protection — and ends with the 3F Filippi luminaires that meet them, with completed projects to prove it.

If you already know what you need, use the list below. If you would rather start from the product, the product filter covers the whole catalogue by performance, optic and protection rating.

Industry, logistics and technical environments

Mounting heights from 4 to over 15 metres, dust, moisture, vibration, wash-downs, continuous shifts. Here light is a plant component: it has to withstand the environment, stay stable for years and never stop production for a maintenance call.

  • Industrial lighting — The basic guide: mounting heights, environment, continuous operation, EN 12464-1 values by department and how to read an industrial luminaire.
  • LED lighting for industrial environments — The technology explained: efficacy, L80 lifetime, thermal management, flicker and the comparison with metal halide, sodium and fluorescent.
  • Lighting for manufacturing plants — Department by department: machining, assembly, painting, quality control, packing. Each stage has its own illuminance and its own risks.
  • Lighting for warehouses — High racking, narrow aisles, shelves to read: vertical illuminance, aisle optics and sensors that switch on only where work is happening.
  • Lighting for logistics — From the dock to dispatch: light for the flow of goods, vehicles in motion, round-the-clock shifts and the transition between outdoors and indoors.
  • Lighting for harsh environments — Dust, moisture, wash-downs, impacts, extreme temperatures, explosive atmospheres: how to read IP and IK and which luminaire each condition needs.
  • Lighting for data centers — Server halls, rack aisles, UPS rooms: reliable 24/7 light, integrated with the BMS, with a heat load that does not weigh on the PUE.
  • Smart lighting for industry — Sensors at 10 metres, rooflights, per-shift zones, energy monitoring and predictive maintenance: how much each strategy yields in a factory.
  • Industrial relamping — One-for-one replacement of high bays, waterproof and fluorescent fixtures with high-efficiency LED: equivalence table, Retrofit kits and payback.

Offices and commercial buildings

Eight hours in front of a screen put glare and uniformity at the centre of everything. The 2021 revision of EN 12464-1 raised the bar: task-tuned illuminance, attention to vertical surfaces, light that follows the working day.

  • Office lighting — Visual comfort at the screen, UGR <19 and energy use halved: the parameters and luminaires for designing office lighting.
  • Smart office lighting — Sensors, DALI-2, Bluetooth mesh and Tunable White: how much each control strategy saves and how it integrates with the building.
  • Office relamping — Replacing old fluorescent fittings with LED on the same lighting points: the process, the equivalence table, the payback time.

Retail, supermarkets and commercial spaces

In a store, light does not illuminate the goods: it sells them. Contrast, colour rendering and dedicated spectra for fresh departments make the difference between a shelf that is seen and a shelf that is chosen — and in large surfaces the installation is also one of the heaviest cost items.

  • Retail lighting — Light as a sales tool: the hierarchy of ambient, accent and window lighting, colour rendering, colour temperatures by merchandise and track systems for shops, showrooms, outlets and supermarkets.
  • Lighting for supermarkets — Supermarkets and hypermarkets department by department: CRISP, MEAT and BREAD LEDs for fresh food, ICE versions for cold rooms and refrigerated counters, batwing optics for the aisles, HACCP suitability and standard illuminance levels.
  • Lighting for commercial spaces — Shopping malls, covered squares, food courts, showrooms, exhibition halls and stations: great heights, daylight, wayfinding for the public and continuous light lines that draw the architecture.
  • Smart lighting for supermarkets — Opening, restocking and night scenes, daylight at the entrances, sensors in back of house and cold rooms, Tunable White on fresh food, D4i monitoring: what each strategy delivers in a store.
  • Supermarket relamping — One-for-one replacement of fluorescent fixtures, metal halide spotlights and downlights with high colour rendering LED, during opening hours: equivalence table, fresh food and refrigerated counters, payback.

Healthcare and assisted living

A single building holds opposite requirements: the operating theatre and the room at night, the laboratory and the waiting area. You need high colour rendering, materials that survive disinfection, night lighting that does not wake anyone and respect for circadian rhythms.

  • Lighting for hospitals — Wards, consulting rooms, operating theatres, laboratories and corridors: illuminance, glare, colour rendering and cleanability for every clinical area, with Tunable White and dedicated night lighting.
  • Lighting for assisted living facilities — Nursing care facilities: residents' rooms with care and night lighting, dementia units, nurses' stations, assisted bathrooms and fall-free corridors, with Tunable White for the sleep-wake rhythm and cleanable materials.
  • Lighting for nursing homes — Residences for self-sufficient elderly people: home lighting designed for an eighty-year-old's eyesight — more lux without glare, warm white, light on the walls, rooms that stay rooms, lounges, gardens and routes that are safe at night.
  • Hospital relamping — One-for-one replacement of fluorescent panels, ceiling fixtures and downlights with LED at CRI ≥ 90 and UGR < 19, ward by ward and without stopping clinical activities: equivalence table, medical locations, lighting verification.

Schools, universities and student housing

Learning spaces are work places in every sense, with the added difficulty of young users, classrooms used for different tasks within the same hour and public budgets that demand figures which add up over the long run.

  • Lighting for schools — Classrooms, whiteboards, laboratories, assembly halls, gyms, libraries and canteens: illuminance, glare and colour rendering for every teaching space, with Tunable White for attention, green procurement requirements and vandal-resistant luminaires.
  • Lighting for student housing — University residences: rooms with desk and bed, study rooms open at night, shared kitchens, laundries, corridors and social spaces — working light and home light in the same building, robust, efficient and managed 24 hours a day.
  • School relamping — One-for-one replacement of fluorescent ceiling fixtures and panels with LED at UGR < 19, classroom by classroom and during the holidays: equivalence table, compliance with EN 12464-1, whiteboards, gyms, funding and green procurement.

Method comes before product

Behind every page in this section lies the same work: photometry measured in our own laboratory, IES and Eulumdat files for calculation software, verification on site.

  • Professional technical lighting — What sets a technical luminaire apart from a standard one — optics, colour rendering, colour tolerance, glare control, certifications, controls — and how 3F Filippi applies it to industry, retail, offices, healthcare, schools and large spaces.

Let us design the light together

Our technical department supports designers, contractors and buying offices with lighting calculations, comparisons between options and compliance checks. The service is free and starts from a floor plan.
